About Carolyn's Quilt Art
Carolyn Beard Whitlow fashions each quilt or throw by selecting its colors with the care of a painter’s palette-her small quilt tops are beautiful when professionally framed as shown on the right. [The cost of her quilt top does not include the cost of framing. Choose a local framer who handles fine art.]
Carolyn Beard Whitlow mixes each quilt’s monochromatic shadings into a custom-design. As every quilt begins with new fabrics, she acquires new ones as she travels-batiks, hand-dyes, watercolors, silk-screen prints, and imported fabrics, mostly from Ghana-combining bold, bright and/or subtle colors into striking original patterns. Embellishments on some quilts include beads, sequins or ribbon. Most of her fabrics are 100% cotton but her shimmer effects are created with synthetics.
A small quilt might use 25 or more fabrics; a large quilt might contain upwards of 125 different fabrics. She is renowned for including tiny pieces of fabric. Sometimes a single fabric or color will appear only once in a quilt; other colors or patterns or textures might repeat an unpredictable number of times. Sometimes a motif echoes through the quilt: for instance, a curve or circle, a line, a darting fish, gold threads, portions of geometric shapes. Words or musical notes might waft through a quilt. The fabrics used to make the borders and to back her quilts are as interesting as the face of the quilt and are of the same high quality, and she uses premium-quality batting. Each back fabric and the border fabrics are unique to each quilt.
No two quilts contain exactly the same colors or fabrics. The customer may select the main color of the quilt, and a secondary color, if desired. Also, the customer can name up to two colors that should not be included in the design, if desired. Other than that, the customer agrees to leave the color choice and the quilt design to the creativity of the artist. Each quilt is signed and dated by the artist.
Carolyn Beard Whitlow can be commissioned to create lap quilts, quilt tops for framing, throws, single, full, and queen-size quilts. The price range takes into consideration the size of the quilt and the number of fabrics included. Occasionally the artist has a quilt ready for sale, but most must be special-ordered. The length of time required to fashion each one-of-a-kind quilt depends on its size.
In every design, Carolyn Beard Whitlow emphasizes her special enthusiasm for her work. Each quilt is made to order and looks fabulous.Quilts may also be ordered personalized with embroidered names, words, logos, quotes, insignias, or other graphics at a special service charge.
